Built 127 years ago in 1892, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church is one
of only four pre-WWII wooden churches left in the City of Albany,
Oregon. The Cumberland is the City's only Queen Anne Style church, the
other three are the more common Gothic Revival.
1892
May – The Cumberland Presbyterian Church is dedicated. It was
built “way out in the country” at the
end of town and city streets. Original records spell it as “Cumberlin”
“People of that part of the City are fortunate in securing in their
midst the establishment of a church.” - States Rights Democrat Newspaper
ca 1920s, the Church is expanded by adding a cross-gable center section.
1931 July – Grace Mennonite buys building and renovates it. “Remolded
both inside & out and will be in first class condition.”
1968 Nov – Faith Bible Church buys building for $20,000.
1987 July – Valley Christian Center, Foursquare Church buys building
1991- Dec – Sequoia Baptist Church buys building
1993 Dec – Living Water Christian Assembly moves in
2000 Jan – City of Albany buys church as part of a traffic project. A
round-about would have been placed in the church's location but was
not workable, so the round-about moved to the next block, saving the
building.
2000-2018 Church stands mostly empty for 18 years
2017-2018 WREN (Willamette River East Neighborhood) association express
interest in the Mayor's idea of moving and saving the church as a
Community
Center. From this, the independent Save Our Cumberland Association is
formed.
